“The question of why manhole covers are typically round, at least in the U.S., was made notorious by Microsoft, who began asking it as a job-interview question. Originally meant as a psychological assessment of how one approaches a question with more than one “right” answer, the problem exerts a strange fascination on people.”

I’m in a position where I interview people and as such I ask this question for the exact same reason microsoft does. I’ve been surprised at how many people will stammer around when posed this question and never really spit out an answer. I typically don’t hire these people. I have to say though I learned the answer to this question when I was just a child from watching an episode of “Mr. Wizard” when I was a child.
